What to eat and drink

The Trattoria da Giovanni offers all the typical dishes of Trieste, in the way our grandmothers used to prepare them: the recipes and secrets of grandmother Elda and sisters Anita and Ada in the kitchen and the ability of brothers Bruno and Gianni in serving guests guarantee authenticity, flavor and atmosphere of tradition. A real journey through the typical and genuine products that will be hard to resist.

Since 1961 the real flavors of Trieste's cuisine

Our buffet counter offers a wide range of seasonal specialties: the irresistible cooked ham in crust of fresh bread cut by hand with mustard and horseradish, that we prepare every morning at 8:00 o'clock, for 50 years. A delicacy that should be tested at least once in a life, served steaming hot (also delicious the warm crust of bread!). Dry-cured ham ripened for over 24 months and cut by hand, local salami and cheese are our own business card that will not leave you indifferent. And if you want to get surprised try our giant mortadella from over 100 kg.

It is also impossible not to be tempted by our delicious meatballs, fried eggplant or fried potato crescents called "chifeletti". In our buffet counter you will find the dishes of the day: bread gnocchi or gnocchi stuffed with prunes, eggplant parmigiana and different kinds of pasta. Also the typical tripe and the goulash can never fail, of course accompanied by a big portion of pan-cooked potatoes.
You will be pleasantly surprised by our typical soups: the "jota", the soup of "bobici" (better known as corn soup), bean and barley soup, rice and peas soup and various vegetable soups.
What about fried fish? Fresh and unique!
Friday also, at the Trattoria da Giovanni, is the day dedicated to fish: hand-wrought creamed dried cod, stewed dried cod with potatoes, cuttlefish with polenta or pasta. Don't miss the cold starters like sardines "in savor", marinated anchovies and small octopuses.
Our cellar offers "ottavi" and "calicetti" (glasses of wine), served straight from the barrel, and traditional spritz with wine, soda and lemon peel. Big selection of bottles of local wine: Terrano, Refosco, Malvasia and Vitovska.

The Malbeck is not a typical wine from our area but is proposed because father Giovanni bought it from a company owned by a Venetian priest and the wine was nicknamed Malbeck of the priest.
